“Huge trees grew nearby, and their leaves intercepted the sunlight very precisely, so that the shadows of the leaves seemed vital and creaturely as they stirred on the ground–an inkling of some super nature, to a sensibility open to such things.” Joseph O’Neill, Netherland

“Dappled light is produced when sunlight is filtered through the leaves of trees. The dapples result not because tree leaves have elliptical holes in them but rather because the leaves combine to make many tiny pinhole cameras, which then produce multiple images of the sun’s surface on nearby projection surfaces. Thus each dapple is an image of the surface of the sun. If there is a large sunspot on the surface of the sun, that spot will appear within each dapple.” Edward Tufte, forum: Dappled Light

“It has been reasoned that our eyes are sensitive in the green part of the colour spectrum because hundreds of thousands of years ago we evolved as a race under forest canopies and light filtered through leaves altered our sight biologically to see well in this wavelength; could it therefore be possible that at a sub-conscious level, we find circular out of focus highlights attractive because at a primitive level, the image is biologically stamped into our psyche?” Paul Traynor, “Bokeh”
