Carl Malmsten was one of the most talented and prolific of the Scandinavian Modern designers. He rejected functionalism in favor of a considered emergence from traditional Swedish craftsmanship and form. Malmsten’s tastes were wide-ranging, and he believed that furniture should be of the highest quality whether it was simple and rustic or elegantly inlaid with exotic woods. He also felt that the furniture people chose to live with should both reflect their personalities, and offer a sense of “intimacy and repose” in the home.
