This double-sided study by the Bolognese painter Giovanni Antonio Burrini exemplifies the stylistic legacy of studio practice of the Carracci and Pietro Faccini at the start of the 17th century. There is also an especially strong correlation to the early “finished” studies from live models made in black chalk by the Baroque master from Bologna, Giovanni Francesco
Barbieri, called Il Guercino. Compare Guercino’s Nude Youth Seated on the Ground in the Windsor Castle, Royal Library (inv. no. 2415).

Burrini was instrumental in bridging the Baroque and the Rococo styles and shared a studio with Giuseppe Maria Crespi, and the stylistic similarities between these two artists is striking.
