Welded steel

Rebecca Welz calls these sculptures “large, kinetic drawings in space.” They emerge from an interest in nets and collapsible structures. All the openings are of different sizes, so that each piece is fluid and changeable. She welds the sculptures out of steel, and one result of her process is that the metal has the appearance of age, as if it had been pulled out of the wreckage of a fire or a flood. The works are at once weighty and delicate, grave and playful, industrial and organic.

Their titles and dimensions are, in order of appearance:

  • Swinging, 24″ x 27″ x 9 3/4″, 2012
  • Rolling, 47″ x 23″ x 9″, 2012
  • Stretched Out, 32″ x 39″ x 8″, 2015
  • Duet, 15″ x 40″ x 5″, 2017

Welz is a New York City-based artist whose interests range widely through the fields of sculpture and design. She has studied biomimicry in Belize, guided furniture-design students in Guyana, and founded the Association of Women Industrial Designers. Welz’s work is included in private and public collections around the world.
